Stanhopea is a genus of about 60-80 species from Central and South America. The genus is named after Philip Henry STANHOPE, president of the Medico-Botanical Society of London. These epiphytic, but occasionally terrestrial orchids can be found in damp forests from Mexico to NW Argentina. They have complex and usually fragrant flowers that are very spectacular however, they last only 1-2 weeks. Most have inflorescences that grow downward, so the plants must be potted in hanging baskets or similar containers.
- They like temperatures of 16oC to 24oC degrees
- Water regularly during the growing season. The plant grows actively in winter and rests in summer when in bloom. Keep compost moist but not waterlogged.
- We recommend using rainwater when watering/feeding
- Bright light in winter, but shade is necessary in summer.
